Vindicated: Confessions of a Video Vixen, Ten Years Later

I heard of Karrine Steffans when I was in high school (2006). Everyone was reading her first book. I’m 34, and this is the first book I’ve read by her. Then, I read her first book after I read this one.

I think her book was straightforward, and I feel she kept me engaged in each chapter. She has been through a lot, and reading her first book, I understand more about her. Many black women have been through similar situations, and this book made me feel connected to her because of what happened to her and what happened to me in my lifetime.

After reading this book, I feel she is trying to become better. I follow her on Instagram and see her grow from her first book to this book, and what she is doing now is growing. She still makes certain mistakes, but she acknowledges them right away than before.

She is pregnant with her second child Kwame Onwuachi. I wish her the best and hope she continues striving at her craft.

Girl, Woman, Other

Girl, Woman, Other is a great book. It was an easy read, and I enjoyed it. I have the book and listened to the audiobook. I loved Anna-Maria Nabirye’s voice when she told the story because she is Nigerian and British, and hearing her voice while reading was very soothing.

There are twelve characters in the book, and each character narrates a chapter in the book to recount their problems. All the female characters have narrated their stories from their own point of view. I love how each character intertwines through some chapters because they grew up together.

I love how Bernardine Evaristo took the time to write this book because numerous conflicts in her stories are eye-openers in each chapter, which shows where it leads to and represents what is still happening today among black women worldwide.

This book taught me a lot about myself because my mother and grandmother raised me and my sisters, and I’ve been through numerous obstacles in my past. This helped me see I’m not the only person in the world who suffered innumerable traumas, and I understood how the characters either dealt with it, moved on from it, or healed themselves from it, etc.

I wish I read this in a book club and discussed what others thought of this gem.

I’m planning on reading more of her books in the future.
